Slovak Mountains
The natural beauty of Slovakia is magnificent and easy to fall in love with... there are high mountains with deep valleys in the north, while lower mountains and woods cover most of the central, western and eastern parts of the country. The south does not have the high mountains but its fauna and flora, lakes, rivers and vine-covered hillsides have just as rich in their own way. Mountains are one of the things Slovakia is most famous for. Hills and mountains cover 60% of the area and are noted for high elevation differences and a unique relief. All different types can be found here: starting from peaceful hills in the western and eastern parts of the country changing to mountain ranges with rocky peaks and narrow valleys in the north. The High Tatras are not only the highest mountains of the Carpathian range, but are also the most compact alpine type of mountains in the world. This beauty and diversity has made Slovakia one of the most highly appreciated hiking and trekking regions in Central Europe. Many hikers visit Slovakia every year, especially from the neighbouring countries. Those who do not know this little piece of land in the heart of Europe and come to Slovakia for the first time are amazed by the number of hiking and trekking paths and the climbing opportunities. Although the High Tatras are the best-known mountains, Slovakia offers fantastic hiking experience in other areas as well. The best- known mountain ranges and some of the most interesting trekking and hiking trails are listed below. These are just some example and, there are many other options of various difficulties at each place.
